Transport for London

Next steps

London Overground's improvement programme is spread across a number of years and we plan to work long and hard into the future to make your service better and better.

Date What's going on?
2009 A new station, Imperial Wharf, will open on London Overground's Clapham Junction to Willesdon Junction line
Ten stations between West Croydon, Crystal Palace and New Cross Gate will transfer to London Overground management
New trains: 24 on the North London, West London and Euston to Watford lines, and eight on the Gospel Oak to Barking line
2010 All stations will be refurbished with CCTV coverage, Help points, customer information systems, passenger announcements, improved lighting and better signs
The extended East London Line will open with 12 trains per hour calling at all stations between Dalston Junction to Surrey Quays. South of Surrey Quays the East London Line splits to three branches, New Cross, West Croydon and Crystal Palace. Each of these branches will be served by four trains per hour.
Four new, step-free stations will open on the extended East London Line: Dalston Junction, Haggerston, Hoxton, and Shoreditch High Street
Twenty new trains will start running on the extended East London Line
2011 More trains per hour will run on all lines so you will be able to 'turn up and go'
The East London Line service will be extended to Highbury & Islington. Dalston to Highbury & Islington will be served by eight trains per hour.
Twenty-four extra carriages will be introduced, lengthening trains from three to four carriages on most of the network
Three extra trains will start running on the extended East London Line
2012 The East London Line will be extended from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction
2013 Some stations will be remodelled, providing new facilities and step-free access (if we get funding)

Orbital railway

When the extended East London line links up with the Richmond to Stratford line at Highbury & Islington in 2011, the beginning of an orbital railway around the Capital will be created.

Transport for London will complete the orbital railway by extending the East London Line from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction. This work is due to be completed in 2012.

With four new, air-conditioned trains per hour, it would take less time to get to Canary Wharf and Broadgate. The orbital extension to Clapham Junction would also help tackle deprivation, improve social inclusion and contribute to lower CO2 emissions.
