Transport for London

Angel town centre

We are currently carrying out works to improve the street environment and local character of Angel town centre.

This is Islington's biggest shopping and business area and is surrounded by densely populated residential streets. Along with the station itself, the result is high numbers of pedestrians using the area throughout the day.

Upper Street and Islington High Street also form part of the A1, one of London's busy strategic traffic routes that caters for heavy traffic flow, high numbers of cyclists and several busy bus routes, including the high frequency Route 38.

We plan to improve the reliability of bus services and the conditions for cyclists and pedestrians, along with helping businesses and making improvements to the environment.

Planned improvements include:

Route 38

The work scheduled to take place on Upper Street is part of the wider Route 38 project to improve reliability and reduce journey times.

This high frequency route operates between Victoria and Clapton and carries in excess of 2,300 passengers per hour during peak times.

TfL is carrying out improvement projects along Route 38, to provide for the needs of traffic, businesses and the community, and give priority to buses, pedestrians and cyclists.

Next steps

Work began during August 2009 and is scheduled to be complete in late 2010. The designs have taken into account feedback from public consultations held between 2007 and 2009 and input from local businesses and interest groups.

The improvements will take place in three phases:

Phase one
Goswell Road Island: better pedestrian and cycle crossings and higher quality public space.

Phase two
Upper Street: improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians and smooth traffic flows.

Phase three
Angel junction: better pedestrian crossing facilities and extended cycle lane.
