Faster trains - better for everyone
In 2011 the network will connect to the extended East London line at Highbury & Islington - the start of an orbital service around London.
Running in the future
The extended East London line will become part of the Overground network when it opens in 2010 - running from Dalston Junction to West Croydon, Crystal Palace and New Cross.
It will eventually link with the North London line at Highbury & Islington in 2011, creating the beginning of an orbital service around London.
London Overground improvement programme
Work is underway on a £326 million upgrade of Transport for London's (TfL) Overground network which will provide reliable connections to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Park.Funded by TfL, the Olympic Delivery Authority, Network Rail and the Department for Transport, the work is being done by Network Rail engineers who will:
- Upgrade more than 200 signals
- Renew 7km of track and 69 sets of points
- Lengthen 30 platforms and make general improvements to a further seven stations.
When the upgrade is complete, London Overground will run up to eight trains an hour during peak times on parts of the network, double the current number, and with a more reliable timetable for those trains. New and longer platforms will allow more carriages per train, increasing seating capacity and reducing overcrowding.
TfL's station improvements include upgrades to CCTV, lighting and passenger information screens as well as new lifts at some locations. This work will run in conjunction with line upgrades to minimise disruption to passengers.
Some services will need to be suspended while work takes place. When this happens, TfL will provide rail replacement buses to get passengers to their destinations.
