Hammersmith & City line

Completion date: 2016

  • Capacity Increase:  65 per cent
  • 53 new trains

Transforming the Hammersmith & City line

The Circle and Hammersmith & City lines include the oldest section of the Tube - from Paddington to Farringdon - and are often crowded and congested. Our upgrade of these lines includes introducing a fleet of longer, more spacious, air-conditioned trains.

From 2011 we will be introducing 53 new seven-car trains which will feature:

  • Air conditioning
  • Walk-through carriages
  • Wheelchair areas
  • Wider doors and walkways
  • Easier access between train and platform
  • Better audio and visual information systems
  • CCTV
  • An energy-efficient braking system

Both lines currently operate six-car trains, which have a 17 per cent lower capacity than seven-car trains.

By 2013 all the new trains will be in use on these lines.

Once the new enhanced signalling system is introduced by 2016, capacity on each will have increased by 65 per cent.

Completed stations:

Bow Road, Bromley-by-Bow, Great Portland Street, Plaistow and Shepherds Bush Market.
