Northern line

Completion date: January 2012

  • Capacity Increase: 20 per cent
  • journey time reduction: Around 18 per cent

Transforming the Northern line

A high-tech signalling system and a brand new control centre will allow us to run more trains on the Northern line - much closer together and at higher speeds.

The line is the busiest on the Tube network. It carries nearly 850,000 people each day on 91 trains and across six branches.

The upgrade will reduce journey times by around 18 per cent and increase capacity by 20 per cent.

Work on the upgrade is now underway. This will require both weekend and early evening closures. We're pressing Tube Lines, who are delivering the work, to review their plans so that you don't suffer any more disruption to your journeys than is absolutely necessary.

By 2018 we plan to partly separate the line so that all trains from Morden run via Bank, and all trains starting at Kennington run via Charing Cross. This would allow us to run 28-32 trains an hour on all branches, compared with 20 an hour today and 24 after the current upgrade.

Completed stations:

Angel, Belsize Park, Borough, Brent Cross, Burnt Oak, Camden Town, Chalk Farm, Clapham Common, Colindale, East Finchley, Edgware, Elephant & Castle, Euston, Finchley Central, Golders Green, Goodge Street, Hampstead, Hendon Central, Highgate, Kennington, Kentish Town, Leicester Square, Mill Hill East, Morden, Mornington Crescent, Old Street, Oval, Stockwell, Totteridge & Whetstone, Tufnell Park, Waterloo, West Finchley and Woodside Park.
