Transport for London

Operators

Licence example

All private hire operators in London must be licensed. This means passengers know they're using a firm with reliable drivers and safe vehicles.

You still need an operator's licence if you're setting up business as an individual.

Exemptions

You do not need an operator's licence if you are only using licensed London taxis (black cabs) or supply vehicles exclusively for weddings or funerals.

Displaying your licence

You must display a copy of your operator's licence at each operating centre specified in the licence.

Anyone who receives payment for taking bookings or supplying drivers for hire without an operator's licence is breaking the law and may be prosecuted.

Licence applications/renewals

Your licence will be valid for five years, after which time you will need to renew it.

Promoting your service

Transport for London offers various travel information services to the public. We can help promote your business across these if you send us your details.

Operators can also apply to use our branding on stationery and signs.
